Speaking Louder than Words with Pictures Across Languages
نویسندگان
چکیده
10,000 words on a single picture, and a similar Japanese proverb devalues this to only 100 words. In most languages the current consensus seems to be that a picture is worth 1000 words. Whatever the true worth in words a good picture is capable of conveying (sometimes quite complex) meaning clearly and without the need for language. Show a picture of an elephant to speakers of two different languages, and most likely they will both understand exactly what it means. A picture can in effect ground the meaning to an object or concept in the real world and act as a convenient bridge over language barriers.

Objectives: Nouns and verbs are the central conceptual linguistic units of language acquisition in all human languages. While the noun-bias hypothesis claims that nouns have a privilege in children’s lexical development across languages, studies on Mandarin and Korean and other languages have challenged this view. Theories of early learning of nouns in children's vocabularies divide into those that emphasize input (language and non-linguistic aspects) and those that emphasize child conceptualisation. Most data though come from production alone, assuming that learning a word equals speaking it. Methodological issues can mean production and comprehension data within or across input languages are not compar...

We perform our experiments on the TwiSty dataset containing manual gender annotations for users speaking six different languages. Our classification results show that, while the prediction mode...

Previous research has revealed that English-speaking preschoolers expect that a novel count noun (but not a novel adjective), applied to an individual object, may be extended to other members of the same basic or superordinate level category. However, because the existing literature is based almost exclusively on English-speakers, it is unclear whether this specific expectation is evident in ch...
